Our team is here to help you select the perfect item based on the type of trailer you own, the size or finish you want, and the budget you have to spend. At the end of the day, we want you to feel confident that you made the right choice in trusting us with your trailer parts needs.
The hitch ball is an important part of every towing setup, whether you’re pulling a utility trailer or a flatbed. Hitch balls vary in size from 1 ⅞” to 3” for most towing needs, and you’ll want to make sure you have the right ball to match your trailer’s coupler size and the gross trailer weight limit. The wrong ball can cause all sorts of problems while driving down the road, so it’s important to take the time to choose the right one.
The first thing to do is to check the size of your trailer coupler. With most manufacturers, the matching hitch ball size will be stamped or labeled on the coupler itself. This will tell you what size of trailer ball you need. From there, you’ll want to make sure the ball shank is the right size for the mount or hitch. If it’s too small, you’ll likely need a reducer bushing to help keep it secure. A 2” trailer ball is perhaps the most commonly used ball, as it can fit most trailer hitches and couplers.
Finally, you’ll want to check that the hitch ball you choose matches the gross weight limit of your trailer. This is the total capacity of your trailer, not just the tongue weight, which is the weight a fully loaded trailer puts on the ball. If the hitch ball doesn’t match the gross capacity of your trailer, you could risk it breaking or coming loose as your towing cargo or equipment down the road.
Our online store has a number of great trailer hitches, ball mounts, and shanks. You might have a good idea of what type of hitch you need, but you’re not entirely sure. Before you order one based off of what you think is best, there are some things you can do to determine exactly what hitch your towing vehicle needs.
The most important thing to keep in mind when towing a trailer is to keep everything as level as possible as you drive down the road. In order to do this, you’ll need to figure out the rise or drop you need for your trailer hitch. The rise is the distance from the top of the hitch to the top of the ball when you need the coupler to be above the towing vehicle (think of a low hitch height and an elevated trailer tongue). The drop is the opposite of the rise — the distance from the top of the hitch to the top of the ball when the coupler is below the towing vehicle (think of a tall hitch height and a lower trailer tongue).
The first thing to do is to measure the height of the hitch on your towing vehicle. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground, and then measure from the pavement to the top of the receiver opening. Next, measure your trailer coupler the same way — from the ground to the bottom of the coupler. Once you have those measurements, subtract the lower one from the higher one, and you’ll have the amount of rise or drop you need! For example, if your hitch height is 20” and the coupler height is 18”, then you’ll need 2” of drop in your hitch mount (20 - 18 = 2). If the coupler height is 20” and the hitch height is 18”, then you’ll need 2” of rise in your hitch mount.
If you have multiple trailers and need different amounts of rise or drop for each one, you can order one hitch and simply reverse its position as needed. You can find a ball mount hitch with both a 2” rise and 2” drop based on which way you insert it into the towing receiver. If you need different hitch ball sizes based on what you’re towing, you can order a dual ball mount hitch and simply rotate the shank as needed.
When you’re towing a trailer down the road, you want to be sure that everything is connected and secure. You have the right hitch ball and the appropriate hitch, but what about the necessary towing hardware, such as hitch pins and clips? At The Trailer Parts Outlet, we can supply all the hardware you need for every trailer you own.
Once you’ve selected your new hitch ball and mount, you’ll need a hitch pin and clip to match. Depending on the size of the hole in the mount shank, you’ll need a pin that fits securely and keeps the shank connected to the towing receiver. The clip keeps the pin from sliding out while you’re driving down the road, and you can feel confident that your trailer is right where it’s supposed to be. If you’re not sure which pin and clip assembly you need based on the hitch you own or purchased, our team will be more than happy to help.
If you’re going to be leaving your towing vehicle and trailer in an unsecured location overnight, or even for a few hours while you’re elsewhere, it’s a good idea to invest in a durable hitch lock. Our catalog has several great options, and they function similarly to a hitch pin and clip. You insert the lock into the fastener hole of the receiver tube, and it prevents the ball mount from being detached. This means no one can drive up, unhook the mount, attach it to their vehicle, and drive away with your trailer.
On top of pins, clips, and locks, we also carry pintle hooks, fifth wheel rails, and bike racks. You can find receiver tube covers and anti-rattle clamps as well, giving you everything you need for your fleet of trailers. If there’s a part you need and don’t see, feel free to contact us at any time. We’re always adding new products to our store, and we can let you know when new items will arrive or when something will be back in stock.
